Shack News: "Despite its title, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is not really a Ninja Gaiden game. It shares some passing similarities, but even the game's producers shy away from direct comparison to the notoriously difficult action titles. After talking to key team members and getting hands-on time, I understand why."

E3 2013: Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Preview | EGM

EGM: "Though Hayashi and co-executive producer Keiji Inafune (of Mega Man fame) deny any influence from Suda51s Lollipop Chainsaw or Shinji Mikamis God HandInafune likens Yaiba more to his own Dead RisingI felt a strong resemblance to those two over-the-top action epics during my hands-on time at E3. Sure, part of it was defeating shambling zombie hordes via colorful combos, but I also felt a connection via the games silly, sometimes-vulgar humor. At one point, Yaiba needed to destroy a panties factory, complete with fishnet-clad legs on the roof. His solution? Have a zombie drive a truckright in between those legs. According to Hayashi, the American developers at Spark Unlimited are behind a lot of the humor in the game, and right now, it seems rather hit-or-miss."

Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z begins with a gorgeous cel-shaded cutscene of series hero Ryu Hayabusa fighting a blue garbed ninja named Yaiba Kamikaze in the woods. The fight is extremely over the top with explosions and insane speeds that tire both ninja. Finally Ryu and Yaiba launch a final strike on one another with Ryu coming out as the survivor. Time passes to the current day where zombies are running wild. Yaiba has been resurrected as a cyborg and is sent out to stop the zombie apocalypse in order to gain power to get his revenge on Ryu.
